Educational Programs

Education is an integral part of the program of the Common Good Soup Kitchen Community. Our goals are to provide educational information and experience with respect to the health and wellness benefits of a natural food oriented diet, and how deliciously as well as nutritionally satisfying such a diet can be. Further we will provide opportunities for one to learn how to prepare, i.e. cook for yourself in a way that is compatible with such a diet. There will be lecture/discussion classes in the fall on the importance of obtaining vitamins and minerals from natural food sources, why this is important what foods to see out. There will be classes on the myriad ways that soybeans and other grains can be used to support a healthy, tasty and affordable diet not only for us right here but for the planet as whole. There will be cooking classes, and an apprentice program for young chefs, as well as cooking demonstrations just about every day in our open kitchen. There will be on the spot provision of recipes and cooking advice at the point of sale of ingredients at our cafe and market. Further as our members express interest in a given topic, i.e. composting or other aspects of recyling, growing an herb garden for home use, etc. we will arrange for classes/demonstrations/programs that address that interest. The program will evolve organically in line with the overall ethos of the Common Good.

In addition to all this, at the most basic level tasting the prepared food from our natural/whole food line will be an educational experience in itself, as well as a delightful one. In a word, our program will be chock full of education.
